Does anyone remember Lamb? Producer Andy Barlow (swoon) and singer-songwriter Lou Rhodes write really beautiful, often uplifting songs that occasionally border on saccharine, but they’re so good I can’t help but love them. It probably wouldn’t kill me to listen to something completely devoid of angst once in a while, right?
They are best known for the songs Gorecki, which was used by Baz Luhrmann in Moulin Rouge, and Heaven, which was in Six Feet Under (still my favorite show ever). Personally, my two favorite Lamb songs were Fly, a soaring, ecstatic anthem from their second album, Fear of Fours, and a very chill, sweet remix of All in Your Hands by Rae & Christian, which I always thought brilliantly captured a feeling of profoundly trusting in someone you love. I was also really into B-line, a song that evokes that heart-pounding-face-flushed-feeling you get when that person you’re secretly crazy about walks into the room. (The admittedly bizarre video used to scare my first girlfriend to the point where she’d demand I change the channel.)
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the British duo released their new album, 5, this past May. I had no idea that they were still around, but I’m glad they’re back. The album has an impressive variety of songs, which range from the more ambient, trip-hoppy Another Language and She Walks, to the guitar driven Build a Fire and huge drums of Last Night the Sky. The rest of the album is very pleasant, but upon first listen these are the tracks that really stood out.
