Say you a gangsta… That don’t impress me none

In light of this weekend’s trip to Miami with Lu & the crew, I think you should check out Kat Dahlia.

Her first single, Gangsta, not only floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee, but it will knock you on your ass quicker than who?* That’s right. Ali. (Muhfuhka.)

No really, this one is straight up angsty ecstasy. My favorite opera singer, Barbara Cook, once said

“The very place where safety lies for us is the thing that seems most dangerous. And that is having the courage to let people really, really into… what life has done to us.”

The first time I heard this song, listening to the raspy edges that seems to barely contain a voice that begs to be truly unleashed, it’s hard not to think Damn. This girl has been through some shit. But when she growls “sacrificing for the kids… Cause that’s what mommys do” you realize that the only thing stronger than the girl’s vocal cords just might be her heart.

*I didn’t start that sentence knowing it would rhyme, but why fight it? You know how I do. #whiteboyholdinitdown #seeimalovernotafighter #butillcrackyateeth
