keep runnin’ baby it’s your race…

Angel Haze is brilliant. I feel woefully ignorant when it comes to rap, but fuck it, I know what I like, and this girl is staggeringly talented. Her lyrics are clever and creative, and through her music she’s managed to make me laugh, cry, and even cut a bitch. (Ok 2 out of those 3. If anyone asks.)

The first songs I fell for were New York and Supreme. Just check them out, they’re an immediately enjoyable intro to her work that will likely wind up on heavy rotation after your first listen. From there, choose your own adventure:

Doo Wop (That Thing) – Treading on sacred ground, Angel writes all new lyrics to the Lauryn Hill anthem that I would argue constitute a genius homage to the original.

Gimme That – This song make my shoulders move in ways a lanky white boy’s probably shouldn’t.

Werkin’ Girls – Fast as Busta with lyrics like “I’m up in the air like duck-duck-duck-bitch” that make me giggle and the creepy-as-fuck video below.

Cleaning Out My Closet – a song about sexual abuse that balances vulnerability and viciousness so perfectly I find it totally overwhelming.

Bitch Bad – a song about domestic abuse; not quite as raw as cleaning out my closet, but just as important.

Hell Could Freeze – You know that feeling of “fuck, I’m losing you…” and the sick pit in your stomach that accompanies it? This collaboration with Rudimental captures that perfectly.

I thought she wasn’t that well known, but then I saw her on the last page of the recent NYTimes Magazine Style issue. So I don’t know whether a.) I’m so far behind I think I’m first, or b.) she’s on a meteoric rise.

Either way, I’m a believer.
