Antlers are the new black.

That was the thrust of a NYT Style section article I found really amusing, but it seems the same is true for the band. Seriously, everybody loves these guys right now.

The Antlers’ 2009 concept album, Hospice tells the story of a relationship between a hospice worker and terminally-ill patient. The band has been somewhat reluctant to explain to what extent this was autobiographical, but the product was unequivocally a very moving record. Kettering and Two were my favorites.

Their new Album, Burst Apart, was released this past May to rave reviews, and I can see why. The song I Don’t Want Love absolutely blows me away. I also think it was a perfect choice for the trailer to the movie Weekend, which I thought was absolutely fucking brilliant. (OK you got me, the Antlers, excellent as they may be, are really just my excuse to write about this movie.) It’s beautiful and funny and sad and true and you KNOW it doesn’t get any better than that. And for the record, don’t call it a gay movie, I think anyone with a soul who’s ever tried to connect with another human being will find it worth while. Just saying.

Oh, right. The Antlers. I’ve also included a cover of the Magnetic Fields’ Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing, off their early EP New York Hospitals. I’m not the hugest shoegaze fan, but I like the sentiment.
